Rainy Day Activities in Laois
This is the situation all too often in our fair isle - the weekend arrives... and so do the rainclouds. Depending on your children's ages and interests, there are lots of things to do in Laois when the rain pours down!
If the weather is just showery remember that many walks are wooded and the trees provide shelter from light showers. However if it is bucketing down and there is no alternative to remain indoors these are our suggestions.
Go to one of Laois's indoor play centres;
- Roll n'Bowl Portlaoise, where there is an area for up to 4 years, Soft play over 4 levels for 4 - 12 year olds, Roller Disco, Indoor Soccer, Bowling, Laser Quest, and "Make your own Teddy Bear". There is a snack cafe and baby changing facilities. When the rain stops there is crazy golf outside.
- Clown Around in Portarlington. This is an indoor play centre and has lots of activities.
- Tearaways in Rathdowney Outlet Shopping Centre. The Shopping Centre has an outdoor play area also, a book and craft shop and a cafe as well as baby changing facilities.
Go to a movie at the Storm Cinema, Portlaoise. There is a kids' club with discounted rates at 12 noon on Saturdays and Sundays.
Visit your local library. All libraries in the county have a junior section. Great for a rainy afternoon - go and read with the children or take part in many of the free events and activities that take place. Go swimming at Portlaoise Leisure Centre where there is a 25m 6-lane pool, a 5m learner pool for adults and children, and a Kiddie's Fun Pool. Portarlington also has a good Leisure Centre. You need to check open swim times. Visit your local bookstore and treat the kids to a new book! Spend time browsing for that special book and go home and read it together!
Lastly, if you cannot leave the house, look for ideas in our ‘what to do on a Rainy day’ section. You are guaranteed to find something to keep the kids entertained whilst stuck indoors!

Lullymore Adventure Park near Rathangan in Co Kildare has the advantage of having indoor and outdoor activities and is a favourite with children.
